Inspired by the visionary work of Jack Stauffacher*, workshop participants will experiment with both large and tiny wood letterforms -- arranging them into dynamic squares of patterns and words as they riff on a central theme. Through layering, repetition, and playful composition, we’ll push the boundaries of letterpress beyond traditional text, transforming type into visual texture. The final result? A collaborative “quilt” of individually printed squares—woven together as a collective take-home piece, celebrating the intersection of typography, design, and artistic experimentation. All experience levels welcome; all materals provided.
*Jack Stauffacher, a self-taught printer, book designer, and master craftsman, nurtured a lifelong fascination with the art of printing. His explorations push the boundaries of wood type, freeing it from its traditional role in communication to instead celebrate letterforms as pure visual elements. Through bold abstraction, dynamic composition, and richly layered prints, Stauffacher reimagines typography as an art form worthy of the gallery wall.
