Book Arts Guild: Carolee Campbell

  • International Printing Museum 315 West Torrance Boulevard Carson $5 (map)

Carolee Campbell, who founded Ninja Press in Sherman Oaks (1984), publishes limited editions of contemporary poetry which she designs, handsets in metal type, prints letterpress, binds, & often illustrates. Her work is heavily influenced by both her extensive experience as a photographer and her career as a distinguished actor.

Following Carolee’s engaging presentation, we'll explore the expressive possibilities of Sumi ink by laying down a rich, wet wash and sprinkling salt across the surface. Watch as the salt crystals pull and shift the pigment, creating unexpected bursts, halos, and organic textures. Experiment with different grains of salt and timing to discover a range of subtle to dramatic effects. Embrace the balance of control and chance, and let the materials lead to new visual discoveries.

See the Ninja Press website for publication & biographical details: ninjapressbooks.com.
