Workshops with Jen Farrell of Starshaped Press

Go Big with Wood Type & Ornament!
Sunday, February 17 at the Printing Museum

Large, luscious wood type paired with beautiful ornament is a winning combination for any letterpress print. In this workshop, we’ll pull from the Museum’s extensive collection of type and look at building text to express a brief message or saying. Then we’ll discuss creating a visual hierarchy with that type and examine how adding ornament can enhance the design. Topics like best practices for working with damaged or old type, combining it with new materials and using color to communicate will be covered. All participants will set their own print and create a small edition to share with the others in the workshop. Participants are encouraged to have basic skills in letterpress printing before this workshop. The workshop is at The International Printing Museum located at 315 W Torrance Blvd. Carson, CA 90745.

Class Fee is $155 plus a $25 materials fee

Go Small with Metal Type & Ornament!
Saturday February 16th at BookArtsLA

Metal type for letterpress printing is undoubtedly one of the most detailed and exquisite examples of craftsmanship, with ornaments that can create everything from simple flowers to elaborate illustrations. In this workshop, we’ll examine the quirks of old type and how to successfully combine it with ornaments in the form of a small keepsake print. Topics covered include understanding design principles and how they affect ornament choice, how to ‘see’ the negative space of metal type and best practices for achieving results with the materials. All participants will set their own print and create a small edition to share with others in the workshop. The workshop is at BookArtsLA located at 11720 Washington Place, Los Angeles, CA 90066.

Jen will be discussing how she addresses a project from initial sketch to final print, sharing solutions for complicated designs and detailing the process through images and support materials she’ll be bringing to the lecture.
