TEEN SUMMER WORKSHOPS

Creative Hangout: Summer Art Lab for Teens. Exercise your imagination and unlock your creative potential at the Printing Museum this summer! These makers' workshops are designed to inspire teens, tweens, and their parents in an active, welcoming, and engaging environment. Creative Hangout workshops are offered on Wednesdays, July 9 through August 13, 1pm to 4:30 pm. Teen/parent duos can register at links below for individual workshops. Please contact the Museum for a full-series discount, or for groups of 3+. 


Letterpress: Type as Image

INSTRUCTOR: Lorna Turner

Course Fee: $130 (parent/teen), $165 (parent/2 teens)

Class Length: Half-day (3.5 hrs)

Unleash your creativity as you transform standard letterforms into whimsical creatures in this hands-on workshop. Your typography will become a work of art — and you’ll learn the art of letterpress printmaking, too — in this playful workshop where letterforms come alive as animals, patterns, and characters. Collaborate with teens and parents in a fun and engaging environment. Explore your imagination and create beautiful prints to take home.


Bookmaking: Fold, Glue, & Sew

INSTRUCTOR: Lorna Turner

Course Fee: $130 (parent/teen), $165 (parent/2 teens)

Class Length: Half-day (3.5 hrs)

Learn how to create five unique softcover book structures using folding, gluing, and simple sewing techniques. This hands-on workshop will introduce the basics of creating one-page ‘zines, origami-inspired pop-ups, accordion fold booklets, and running stitch bindings. Teens and parents will leave with five handmade books, the foundational knowledge to continue your bookmaking journey, and the inspiration to embark on further DIY artistic projects.


Mono Screen Printing: Shapes & Colors

Delve into the vibrant realm of mono-screen printing, inspired by abstract artists like Henri Matisse and Hilma af Klint. Design and cut intricate stencils, learn the basics of mono-screen printing, and utilize ink, screens, and squeegees to create bold and colorful prints. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a new appreciation for screen printing and a set of beautiful prints to take home as keepsakes of your journey.

Inspired by retro video game classics like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Mario Bros, you’ll create your very own pixel-perfect prints by transforming tiny plastic tiles into unique masterpieces. Sketch your ideas on graph paper, build your design using LEGO tiles, and learn how to ink the press and print your design. By the end of the workshop, parents and teens will not only have a newfound printmaking skills, but also a set of unique pixel art prints!


Stamping: Design It, Carve It, Print It

Join us for an unusual workshop where teens and parents will design and carve their own custom rubber stamps—transforming simple shapes into bold, abstract artwork! Creating your own rubber stamps is a fun, versatile, and totally accessible way to jumpstart your creative process. In this hands-on class, you’ll sketch your ideas, transfer them to a block, then carve and print. This creative activity is both relaxing and invigorating for parents and teens.


Collaging & Button Making

Dive into the exciting worlds of collaging and button making as you cut, paste, draw, design, and create all afternoon long! Embrace the opportunity to explore playful layering, thoughtful composition, and bold mark making in a supportive and encouraging environment. Parents and teens will not only walk away with custom buttons and collages but also with excitement for the transformative power of creativity.
