Shino is a designer and freelance illustrator whose work has appeared in newspapers, books and magazines.  Ken plays and teaches the piano, and loves all things vintage.  She worked for another letterpress card company for three years, but with her love for cute characters and his love for big, old machinery, it was a matter of time before they started their own.  It is their hope that people enjoy their cards as much as they do making them!

POLI MARICHAL (BOOTH D38) www.polimarichal.com polimarichal@earthlink.net (323)655-1275

I’ve been printing limited editions of my smaller woodcuts, linocuts collagraphs and mixed media works using a 1963 Reprex proof press that I bought in 2002 from a printer in Pico Union who retired and sold most of his equipment for a pittance. It gave me great satisfaction to save this wonderful piece of machinery from being sold for scrap metal. Now it will have what I hope will be a long and fruitful life in my studio.
I’m a founding member of Los de Abajo Printmaking Collective and a printmaking instructor at Self-Help Graphics & Art, Inc. Last year I became a member of Los Angeles Printmaking Society. Lately, I started learning the technique of encaustic and plan to combine it with my printmaking work. I’m thrilled to see the printmaking renaissance that is shaking the art world once again and the new and fascinating directions it is taking.

I was born and raised in Prague, Czech Republic. I studied at Charles University in Prague and received a dual degree in mathematics and visual art. At that time I was introduced and captivated by the graphic arts. While raising my children, working full time as a teacher, and after immigrating to the United States with my husband and four children in 1984, my interest in art was limited to my spare time. I began to take up art again once my family responsibilities dwindled down. Besides oil painting, watercolor painting, and drawing, I was excited to revive my interest in the graphic arts from my college years. I have practiced my skills and further explored printmaking largely on my own. I equally enjoy working with the intaglio technique as I do with the monotype. I like to combine the centuries old techniques of intaglio with the plain elegance of its flowing line work with various contemporary printmaking techniques. In this year 2010 I earned a membership into Los Angels Printmaking Society and was juried into the Santa Barbara Printmakers.
