Book Arts Institute Announces
Summer Program Schedule

An exciting schedule of summer classes and programs has been rolled out by the Book Arts Institute’s new director, Rachelle Chuang. Classes include Letterpress Basics and Introduction to the Book Arts; each will be offered three times over the course of the summer. In addition, two special programs are being offered: Family Pop Up Books Day on July 5, and Family Paper Day on August 2.

 

Letterpress Basics

In the Letterpress Basics class, you will immerse yourself in the traditional process of letterpress printing in this half-day introductory session. Students will take a brief tour of the Museum to become familiar with the various presses in our collection and then learn hand typesetting with metal type and an image. Basic letterpress printing skills on a Vandercook or Platen Press will be covered. Students will print two small projects. Designed for the beginner as an opportunity to experience the basics of letterpress printing.

Dates & Time: Second Saturdays, 9:30-2pm (half-hour lunch break)

Fee: $100 + $25 lab fee

Level: Beginner, age 18 and up

Class Schedule: Second Saturdays of the month beginning Summer 2008: June 14, July 12, August 9.

 

Introduction to the Book Arts

Introduction to the Book Arts is a general course that will introduce students to the field of Book Arts. Students will make samples of both sewn and non-sewn book structures and then choose one to complete into a finished piece. Various cover-making approaches will be developed using materials such as decorative or handmade papers, book cloth and paste-papers. Note: Letterpress will be mentioned but not in-depth. Focus of this course is on contemporary bookmaking techniques.

Dates & Time: 9:30-2:00 for 2 consecutive Saturdays (half-hour lunch break)

Fee: $220 plus $25 materials fee

Level: Beginner, 18 and up

Class Schedule: Third and Fourth Saturdays of the month beginning Summer 2008: June 21 & 28; July 19 & 26; August 16 & 23.

 

Family Days Offered First Saturdays of the Month along with the Leather Apron Docent Guild

Family Pop-up Books Day: pop-up books and Paper-engineering is a POPular field today. Come learn basic three-dimensional techniques that can be used for cards and books and then make your own finished piece complete with a hard cover.

Date & Time: Saturday, July 5. Come anytime between 10:00 and 4:00

Fee: Free with Admission to the Museum ($8 adults $7 students/children)

Level: Any (small children may need help with folding and cutting)

Family Paper Day: bring yourself and your family for a day of fun studying, making and decorating paper! Three stations will be available for paper study including basic Western papermaking, Paste Papers and Decorative techniques such as marbling and dip-dying.
